A book to celebrate the SaloneSatellite’s 25th anniversary
“satellite [Sa-tell-ite) n./adj. describes any celestial body in orbit around a planet”
“In a Galilean twist, sometimes the planet orbits the satellite. This phenomenon has occasionally occurred in Milan, notably with SaloneSatellite, the influential Salone del Mobile satellite. Over the years. SaloneSatellite has attracted increasing attention and curiosity, sometimes even surpassing the main event itself. Magnetic attractions, a desire for discovery and a longing to explore newly sown fields not yet rich with mature fruits. Hic sunt leones.” – ITALO LUPI
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the SaloneSatellite, the event devoted to young designers founded and curated by Marva Griffin Wilshire has issued a volume in English and Italian entitled “Universo Satellite. 25 anni di / years of SaloneSatellite”. Published by Corraini and edited by Beppe Finessi, it contains 752 pages and over 1,200 images and includes previously unpublished documents and personal accounts.
“Designers have always measured themselves against the “chair“; the quintessential furniture design challenge […] and often view it as an identity-defining object. […] Imbued with a strong, sculptural quality, in his unique way Satyendra Pakhale explored fluid forms that hint at other (natural) universes. His masterpiece, the Fish Chair (2001, Cappellini) employed what was then the ground-breaking technology of rotational molding. Spotted by Giulio Cappellini-s well honed eye, Fish Chair rapidly established itself as a new icon. Cappellini elevated both the chair and creator, from a hitherto poorly represented yet exceptional country (India), to international design world prominence.”
