Architect-designer, Satyendra Pakhalé was born in India in 1967. He graduated in mechanical engineering from the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology in Nagpur in 1989 and continued his studies at the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, earning a master’s degree in 1991, then studying Advanced Product Design at the Art Center College of Design in Switzerland from where he graduated in 1994. With a studio in Amsterdam, Pakhalé was senior product designer for Philips Design in Eindhoven between 1995 and 1998 and between 2006 and 2010 Head of the Department for Humanity and Sustainable Living Program at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Pakhalé belongs to that new generation of ‘global’ designers (such as the English pyrotechnician Thomas Heatherwick) who tackle the different scales and the most varied themes not so much by following the old modernist slogan “from the spoon to the city”, but by addressing every creative occasion in a ‘holistic manner, without ever neglecting the emotional aspect of the result, be it an object of industrial production or an architecture, of ‘multisensory design’. The “culture of creation”, as this rich monograph on the work of Satyendra Pakhalé Associatesis named, focuses on industrial design, declined on various scales up to face the world of mobilityand architecture. “Creating curiosity in objects,” he says Pakhalé, “does not necessarily mean responding to a need for utility like drawing something to fill a space, a cubic object for example, because everything has already been done. For me design really has to create that poetic connection with the user’s imagination to become part of his own life.” The various contributions that make up the book deal with all of this, an eloquent ‘portrait’, accompanied by a rich iconographic apparatus, of one of the most interesting `global designers’ of the new millennium.

e i temi più svariati non tanto seguendo il vecchio slogan modernista “dal cucchiaio alla città”,quanto affrontando ogni occasione creativa in modo ‘olistico, senza mai rinunciare all’aspettoemozionale del risultato, sia esso un oggetto di produzione industriale o un’architettura,di ‘design multisensoriale’. La “cultura della creazione’, comesi intitola questa ricca monografia sul lavoro di Satyendra Pakhalé Associates, si concentra sul design industriale, declinato su varie scale sino ad affrontare il mondo dei trasporti e dell’architettura. “Creare curiosità negli oggetti”, afferma Pakhalé, “non significa necessariamente rispondere a un’esigenza di utilità come disegnare qualcosa che riempie lo spazio, un oggetto cubico per esempio, perché tutto è stato già fatto. Per me il design deve davvero creare quella connessione poetica con l’immaginazione dell’utilizzatore per diventare parte della sua vita” Di tutto questo trattano i vari contributi che compongono il libro, un ‘ritratto’ eloquente, corredato da un ricco apparato iconografico, di uno tra i più interessanti `designer globali’ del nuovo millennio.
